RECOMMENDED READING

Cuba and Its Music: From the First Drums to the Mambo – Ned Sublette (ISBN1-55652-516-8)

Erudite, unbiased, informed, factual, lovingly and passionately researched, historically thorough, fun and entertaining! It beautifully links and documents the story of the drum on its journey and many routes from primal Africa to Spain, through to Islam, Europe and finally Cuba. If you read only one book about Cuban music, its political and ethnic history, it’s intertwined and symbiotic relation with the US up to the embargo, this is the one. A tour de force!
